JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – King University (2-3) took a 3-2 win over the Carson-Newman (0-3) men's soccer team earlier this evening.
"We did a lot of really good things the first 45 minutes," Carson-Newman junior midfielder Sindre Welo said. "We dominated the game and then ruined it by conceding three terrible goals."
The Eagles went up 1-0 with 11 minutes to go in the first half. A Tornado defender blocked a shot taken by Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) sending it in the direction of C-N junior Robert Wagner (Halle, Germany). Wagner capitalized on the deflection for his first goal of the season and put the Eagles up one nil.
The Tornado tied it up three minutes into the second half. Chris Hicks sent a grounded pass through the box to Faber Bickerstaffe who flicked the ball past C-N keeper.
"It was a disappointing result," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "We controlled a lot of the game but left ourselves wide open on the counter attack."
King took a 2-1 lead ten minutes later when Alfred Schwab sent another grounded cross through the box for Zachary Clark to finish one touch.
Four minutes later, King's Oli Hall put up an unassisted goal for a 3-1 lead.
"I don't know what happened," Welo said. "We switched off for twenty minutes and it cost us the game."
The Eagles scored their second goal in the 71st minute when freshman Tanner Heath (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) deflected a cross sent in by Rurik Pereira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) toward junior winger Welo who hit the ball first time far post. Welo now has two goals on the year.
"We have a great team, but we need to learn to work together," Coach Moodie said. "The season is in our hands."
C-N outshot the Tornado 18 to 13. King placed seven shots on goal and the Eagles six. Junior keeper Kavi Luchowa (London, England) made four saves for Carson-Newman.
"These are mistakes," Welo said, "that we need to learn from as a team, bounce back and be ready for Catawba on Saturday."
The Eagles continue home play and open conference play against Catawba Saturday Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. The match can be followed live at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/cneagles/.
