JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After 110 minutes, the battle between the Carson-Newman (4-4-2, 3-1-2 SAC) men's soccer team and SAC adversary Lincoln Memorial (5-3-2, 2-2-2 SAC) finished with a 2-2 draw.
"It was a good result," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said, "because we came back from being down twice. But it wasn't a good result in that we conceded two goals at home."
With just over two minutes left in the first half, an LMU player was fouled in C-N's box and the Railsplitters were awarded a penalty kick. LMU goalkeeper Marcel Barwanietz took the PK placing it in the right side netting for his second goal of the year. The Eagles went into halftime trailing 1-0.
"The attitude of the team has been really great," senior midfielder Joao Dowsley said, "bouncing back from bad results. We just keep working hard."
Eleven minutes into second half, Marius Staalby (Norway) sent a ball to senior Joao Dowsley (Brazil) who rocketed a shot first time for his fourth goal of the season.
The match remained tied at ones for eight minutes until Pedro Villa's unassisted goal, his fourth on the year.
"Lincoln Memorial," Coach Moodie said, "strategically placed 11 bodies behind the ball and looked to score on the counter attack. It was effective."
Junior Sindre Welo (Norway) answered back in the 69th minute. Dominik Gronwald (Germany) slotted a ball into LMU's 18-yard box setting Welo up for a one-touch shot. Welo now has four goals for 2014.
"It was a great achievement," Coach Moodie said, "having the fight to come back after going down a goal twice."
Lincoln Memorial's Yuri Passos received his second yellow card of the match equaling a red card in the 85th minute leaving the Railsplitters with ten players on the field. Two minutes later, Rurik Pereira (Brazil) received a red evening out the men on the field. Both teams played a man down for the next 23 minutes.
The Eagles outshot LMU 22 to 19 and 10 to nine in shots on goal. Junior keeper Kavi Luchowa (England) tallied seven saves on the match.
Robert Wagner (Germany) still leads the Eagles in points with 12 followed closely by Welo with 11, Staalby with nine, Dowsley with eight and Gronwald with seven.
"We're fighting to be top of the conference," Dowsley said. "That's one of our goals this season. We need to win at Newberry."
The Lads continue conference play at Newberry Saturday at 1 p.m.
