HICKORY, N.C. – The Carson-Newman (4-4-1, 3-1-1 SAC) men's soccer team swept Lenoir-Rhyne (3-5-1, 3-2 SAC) 4-0 on its home turf for the Lads' third conference victory of the season.
"This," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said, "was the boys' best performance yet."
The Eagles put up three goals in the first 45 minutes. Marius Staalby (Norway) claimed the game winning goal, his second of the year, in the 23rd minute off a cross from Aiden McGovern (Ireland).
Eight minutes later, Robert Wagner (Germany) collected a rebounded save inside L-R's six-yard box to put C-N up by two. Wagner now has six goals on the season.
"Going forward," Coach Moodie said, "we looked dangerous all night, and we never looked like conceding."
Senior Joao Dowsley (Brazil) finished first-time a pass from Staalby off a free kick five minutes later to advance the Eagles' lead to three.
The Lads entered half leading the Bears 3-0. Twelve minutes into the second, C-N was awarded a penalty kick which Lucas Siqueira (Brazil) buried in the back of the net.
Carson-Newman outshot the Bears 18 to 13 and 10 to three in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Kavi Luchowa (England) tallied three saves and his fourth win of the season.
Staalby led the Eagles in shots having taken four, three of which were on target. Dowsley and Dominik Gronwald (Germany) each released three shots while Wagner, Siqueira and Welo had two.
"Marius Staalby," Coach Moodie said, "was amazing again tonight."
Staalby moved to third place in C-N's stats with two goals, four assists and eight points. Wagner holds the lead with six goals and 12 points followed closely by Welo with three goals, three assists and nine points.
The Eagles fly home to McCown Field for a 7:30 p.m. SAC contest against Lincoln Memorial this Wednesday.
