WINGATE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman (3-4, 2-1 SAC) men's soccer team saw its streaks of shutouts and wins brought to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss at Wingate (5-2, 3-1 SAC). The Lads' three consecutive shutouts prior to today's match and what was 298 minutes without conceding a goal were C-N's longest streaks since 2006.
The Eagles took the lead in the sixth minute. Junior center back Rurik Pereira (Brazil) got on the end of a pass from Marius Staalby (Norway) inside Wingate's 18-yard box and bicycle-kicked the ball past the keeper for his first goal of the season. Kristian Speake (United Kingdom) is credited with the double assist.
C-N held its lead for the majority of the first half. "The boys fought hard," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said.
With three minutes remaining before halftime, Rodrigo Ugalde collected a poorly cleared ball in the Eagles' defensive third and distributed it to an open Gui Peron on the left side of the box. The match entered halftime tied at ones.
In the 76th minute of action, Dominik Gronwald (Germany) received his second yellow card of the game equaling a red card. The Eagles played a man down for the remainder of the contest.
"Going to 10 men," Coach Moodie said, "we still looked good."
Three minutes into overtime, Liam Gillesphey sent a pass behind the C-N defensive line to Peron who crossed the ball into the box. Charlie Machell greeted the ball for his sixth goal of the season and the Bulldog victory.
The Eagles outshot Wingate 11 to 10 and six to three in shots on goal. Sindre Welo (Norway) and Aiden McGovern (Ireland) each released two shots for C-N.
"We made some mistakes and it cost us the game," Coach Moodie said. "But we move on to Wednesday."
The men head home to McCown Field for Wednesday's matchup against SAC rival Tusculum. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Watch or follow live at www.cneagles.com/live.
