WISE, Va. – Carson-Newman (16-5, 12-3 SAC) had its six-game winning streak snapped by UVA Wise (13-8, 10-5 SAC) on Wednesday evening, falling 83-70 at the Prior Convocation Center.
"We just didn't play well enough to win today," Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey said. "Credit to Wise, they scored 13 above their average and they score really well at home. They play very well at home. The way we got started offensively wasn't good and we weren't moving well together. We got back to our normal self in the third quarter and had more energy."
The first quarter of play was filled with scoring runs. UVA Wise scored the game's first 10 points and held C-N scoreless for over four minutes to start the game. C-N would counter. Off the bench, Caroline Hill made a pair of layups to ignite an 8-0 scoring run to make it a two-point game with 2:55 left in the first.
The next three minutes of game action was controlled by the Cavaliers. They scored the next 16 points, spanning the quarter break to lead by 18 early in the second. Emily Gonzalez (Lenoir City, Tenn.) scored the first six points of the second quarter, but Wise would go on another extended run. It used a 10-2 scoring run to jump out to 25 point lead with three to play in the half. C-N would gain some momentum late in the half, ending the second frame on a 9-2 run to trail by 18 at halftime.
Carson-Newman played very well early in the third quarter. A pair of Hill triples sparked an early 8-0 scoring run to make it a 12-point game just two minutes in. Another mini 7-0 scoring run made it a seven-point game after Keeleigh Rogers scored five straight points with 3:26 left in the third. Wise would control the rest of the third, outscoring C-N 17-8 over the final three minutes to lead by 16.
Consecutive baskets by Emily Gonzalez brought C-N within 12 just over a minute into the fourth quarter. Wise would go on a pair of 6-0 scoring bursts throughout the fourth quarter to open back up a 20-point lead. C-N would finish the game on a 10-2 scoring run.
Emily Gonzalez (Lenoir City, Tenn.) recorded her fourth career 20-point game by scoring 20 points on six for 11 shooting.

Despite shooting 50 percent in the second half, C-N was just 38 percent for the game and was just four of 22 from long range. Wise was 44 percent and made nine triples.
UVA Wise got a pair of 20-point games. Caroline Mullins scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Emilea Preece reset her career-high going for 22 points on six made triples.
