JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (17-8, 13-6 SAC) plays its 13th and final road game of the 2025-26 regular season when it visits Eleazer Arena for a matchup with Newberry (13-12, 7-12 SAC) Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Carson-Newman got back in the win column on Wednesday night at Holt Fieldhouse by defeating Emory & Henry 91-63. In her sixth career start, it was Caroline Hill that led the way to the win. She poured in a career-high 30 points on 10 for 11 shooting in the win. Her eight three-pointers are the second-most in a game in program history. The sophomore is the second Lady Eagle to score 30 or more points in a game this season.
"We needed a win," Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey said. "We've just tried to get back to who we are and Wednesday night we got back to who I really would like us to be. Sticking with our bench early, paid off once we got to the third quarter with our starting group going on a 21-0 run."
The Lady Eagles got back to their rebounding ways on Wednesday night as well. Entering Wednesday's game, they had been outrebounded in four of its last five games. C-N completely flipped the script and dominated the glass, grabbing a season-high 53 rebounds. The +25 margin on the glass was the biggest discrepancy since having a +33 margin in a 74-47 win over Mars Hill on February 16, 2022.
C-N has been hit or miss in its 12 road games this year, to get to a 6-6 road mark. Mincey's squad has been held below 60 points three times on the road, but has also scored 90 or more points on the road this season.
In 55 career games with C-N, Jennifer Sullivan has made 124 three-pointers, the 12th-most in program history and is just six away from moving into the top ten. To reach that mark, she has done so on superb efficiency. Sullivan's 40.1 career three-point percentage is third-best all-time in program history. This season, she has drilled 63 triples which is the second-most in the league.
Mattie Nuckolls (Chatsworth, Ga.) continues to lead the conference in blocks with 53. She has nine games this year with at least three blocks including back-to-back. For her career, she has 101 blocks and is 17 away from moving into the top seven in program history. Nuckolls' presence has helped C-N lead the SAC in blocks per game, averaging 5.6 per game, fifth nationally.
Carson-Newman has dominated this series over the past decade. The Lady Eagles have won 17 straight meetings versus Newberry, including seven straight at Eleazer arena. 13 of the 17 wins for C-N are by double-digits including six in a row. All-time, C-N leads the series 40-17.
The top eight teams qualify for the South Atlantic Conference basketball tournament. Newberry is in a three-team battle for the final two spots, currently tied for eighth place at 7-12 with Anderson. Overall, the Wolves are one game above .500 at 13-12.
Since the calendar flipped to February, Newberry has won games against Emory & Henry and Tusculum, while suffering losses to Anderson, Lenoir-Rhyne and most recently, Wingate.
At home this season, Newberry is 7-5 but it has lost four of its past six games since starting 5-1. Its two most recent home losses came by double digits to ranked teams, Coker and Lenoir-Rhyne.
Rickell Brown continues to be one of the most improved players in the SAC this season. After averaging just three points as a rookie, she has boosted her average all the way up to a team-best 16 per game this season. Carson-Newman is one of just four teams that have held her to below double-figures this season.
Brown leads the way for a Newberry defense that holds opponents to just 64 points per game, fourth-best in the league.
Tip off with the Wolves is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network begins at 1:45 with the AEC Countdown to Tipoff on Mix 105.5 (WSEV-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
