Four athletes tabbed as athletes to watch for women’s track & field
Freshman Meiah Moss joins returners, Sade de Sousa, Brooke Taylor and Jenna Pittman on the list
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Sade de Sousa, Brooke Taylor, Jenna Pittman and Meiah Moss were named SAC Athletes to Watch by the league office earlier today.
Head coach Kieran Showler-Davis highly anticipates the roles of Sade de Sousa and Brooke Taylor following strong 2024-25 seasons. Jenna Pittman transitions from her All-Southeast Region fall with the cross-country team to one of the distance leaders on the track, with Meiah Moss expected to contribute as a freshman.
The Eagles began their indoor campaign today at the Liberty Kickoff.
"I'm feeling excited and optimistic," Showler-Davis said in anticipation of the start of the new year. "It's still very early, but it's always exciting seeing where returners are in their training and getting a first chance to see new athletes have a run out."
For de Sousa, she is coming off a year where she was named Second Team All-American and All-Region.
Set one of the top times across Division II at the Finn Pincus Invitational in the 60m with a qualifying time of 7.41, but she placed second in the event finals at the meet. Won the 60m at the Liberty Open. Had a podium finish in the 60m at the SAC Championships, coming in third with a 7.56. Qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, placing 12th in the preliminaries, her third consecutive year as an All-American in the indoor 60m dash.
Taylor has been a mainstay with the Eagles in both the long jump and triple jump.
She excelled at the VMI Team Challenge, earning first place in the triple jump with 11.34m and second place in the long jump with 5.49m. Sixth-place finish in the long jump at the VMI Invitational. She set her PR in the 60m at the Liberty Open with a 7.89. At the SAC Indoor Championships, Taylor came in fifth in both the long jump, 5.53m, and triple jump, 11.36m.
Pittman is gearing up for the indoor season after an All-Region performance during cross country in the fall. Additionally, she was named the SAC Elite 23 Award winner for her academic excellence.
Last year, she won the 800m at the Finn Pincus Invitational with a 2:30.60 to start the season. Would later set her PR in the mile at the Music City Challenge, clocking a 5:11.88. At the SAC Championships, she finished in 15th in the 3000m and also set her PR with a 10:29.14.
Moss enters his freshman year, hailing from Baxter, Tennessee. She attended Upperman High School, where she qualified for the State Championships. Moss made her Carson-Newman debut this morning in the pentathlon at the Liberty Kickoff.
Carson-Newman opened the season today at the Liberty Kickoff, with day two happening tomorrow. On Saturday, it will head to Lexington, Virginia, for the VMI Colonel Bev Read Opener.
"Competition is the fun part of the year," Showler-Davis said. "These early meets give us a chance to knock off some rust and a gauge going into Christmas of where we're at individually."
These mark the only two events in December, before the season fully kicks into gear in the new year following Winter Break.
