JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (11-11) continues its week on the road, beginning a South Atlantic Conference series against Emory & Henry (6-15) tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Emory, Virginia.
Carson-Newman has won consecutive games for the first time since mid-February by defeating Lee 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon. C-N's win ended a seven-game losing streak against the Flames.
The Eagles continued their success in non-conference contests, improving to 8-2 with the win on Tuesday. Now, they will look to carry some of that momentum into its first road conference series in March. Through their first four conference series, the Eagles are 3-9 but have played two top ten teams as well. In conference play, C-N has six losses by three runs or less and five by two or less.
Logan Floyd (Adairsville, Ga.) continues to showcase himself as one of the best hitters in the conference and in the region. After a trio of multi-hit days this past week, Floyd now has 52 career games with at least two hits, 12 of which have come this season. The junior infielder is tied for fourth in the SAC in batting average, hitting .423 this season. Nine of his 33 hits have gone for doubles, the second-most in the league this season. He's added two triples and four home runs, to hit for extra bases 15 times this season. Three of his four home runs came this past week.
Carson-Newman's starting rotation is coming off quality performances in last weekend's series vs #3 Catawba. The trio of Kolton Casson, Ryan Higgins and Christian Henderson combined to allow just one run to score in the first five innings in each of those games. Counting Tuesday's game at Lee, C-N has allowed just two runs in the first five innings of its past four games.
The Eagles have won nine of the ten all-time meetings against the Wasps. E&H's win in the series came in the series finale in Emory, Virginia in March of 2024. Since that result, C-N has won four straight games including a sweep of the Wasps last season.
Emory & Henry snapped a seven-game losing streak by defeating UVA Wise in a midweek contest on Wednesday 6-5. The Wasps scored five unanswered runs after trailing 5-1 in the eighth inning. Entering the weekend series, E&H is 6-15 overall and is 3-9 in SAC play. All three conference wins came in their series openers against UVA Wise, Lincoln Memorial and Newberry. In its most recent conference series, E&H was swept by Tusculum and outscored 43-18.
E&H has won just two of its first eight home games this season. Their first home win was in the series opener against LMU, with the second coming yesterday against Wise.
Much of the struggles for the Wasps have started on the mound. As a team, their 11.60 earned run average is the worst in the SAC and ranks 238th nationally out of 249 DII teams. They have allowed opponents to score double-digit runs in 12 of their 21 games, with four of them having scored 20 runs or more.
All three conference wins this season have been because of senior pitcher Jacob Nester. The right-hander won SAC Player of the Week after tossing a complete game shutout against Newberry on February 27. In his other four starts, Nester has allowed at least five earned runs. Brady Halstead has been of E&H's better relievers, sporting a 3.45 earned run average over 15 2/3 innings this season.
The Wasps has utilized the long ball to their advantage. They have hit 23 home runs led by Ky Gregoire's six home runs and .423 batting average in 19 games. Leadoff hitter Jaret Hoppes has been the toughest hitter to strikeout in the SAC this season. He has struck out just twice in 67 at bats.
First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The game can be heard on cneagles.com/live. Fans can also watch the radio crew at work with a feed of press row on YouTube.
