JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the first time in 20 days, Carson-Newman (17-12, 8-10 SAC) returns home to the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex as it begins an eight-game homestand with a South Atlantic Conference series versus Newberry (19-12, 13-5 SAC) starting tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
Even with playing the last eight games on the road, C-N fared very well during the road stretch by winning seven of those games.
Carson-Newman is playing some of its best baseball of the season here in March. More than half of the team's wins this season have come this month, with still four games to play in March. The Eagles are 9-4 this month with seven of those wins coming in conference play. They have won eight of their last nine games.
Leading this surge in March has been the All-SAC duo of Logan Floyd and Cole Nathan. The two have combined to drive in 31 runs on 37 hits this month. They two of eight C-N hitters with a .300 batting average or better this month. Leading the team in batting average in March is Carson Cochran. The redshirt-sophomore is hitting .500 in nine starts this month
Speaking of offense, Carson-Newman's bats have added the power element to its game in the month of March. The Eagles have blasted 18 home runs this month after having just three in the first 14 games of the season.
Carson-Newman's starting pitching continues to anchor one of the best pitching staff's in the South Atlantic Conference. The Eagles' 4.81 earned run average and 9.3 hits allowed per contest are both third-best in the league. C-N has pitched a complete game shutout in its last two conference series. All-American Kolton Casson is leads the staff with a 2.45 ERA, the second-lowest mark in the league. His six victories are tied for the most in the league and tied for the eighth-most nationally.
After losing six of their first eight two-run games this season, the Eagles have now won four straight games decided by two-runs or less and are 6-6 this season.
Carson-Newman has won consecutive series against Newbery for the first time since the 2013 and 2014 seasons. C-N has been extremely dominant at home in this all-time series, winning 33 of the 42 contests at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex against the Wolves.
Newberry has been one of the more surprising teams in the South Atlantic Conference this season. The Wolves were picked to finish seventh in the conference's preseason poll, but have found themselves near the top of the league standings all season long. That has been the case because the Wolves started 5-0 in conference play this season and have three separate winning streaks during league play this season. Overall, they are 19-12, and tied for third in the SAC with a 13-5 record and just a half game out of second.
The Wolves have faced off against just one other SAC school with a winning record in league play this season. That was Lincoln Memorial at home this past weekend and the Wolves two of the three games in the series. The losses were in the series opener and finale, both by one run. Newberry has conference sweeps over Anderson and Tusculum and has series wins over UVA Wise, Emory & Henry and Coker.
The Wolves head to Mossy Creek with momentum, after beating #10 North Greenville at home on Tuesday 8-2. All eight runs they scored came in the first three innings of the game.
Second-year head coach Jay Snyder's team is all about small ball and pitching. They allow the fewest hits per game in the SAC and are second in the in team ERA at 4.65. A good pitching staff always has a good defense and the Wolves' .972 fielding percentage is also second-best in the league. Newberry has two of the best starting pitchers in the conference this season in Jacob Clark and Nick Riedel. The young duo has a 2.7 ERA and are top two in strikeouts, innings pitched and wins. Riedel is a perfect 6-0 in his seven starts this season and has pitched seven innings in three of his last four starts
Offensively, the Wolves are fifth-nationally in sac bunts with 28 and are 29th in stolen bases with 64.
First pitch tomorrow afternoon is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. A video stream of the weekend series is available with a subscription to FloSports at cneagles.com/flobase. The game can be heard on cneagles.com/live. Fans can also watch the radio crew at work with a feed of press row on YouTube.
