Floyd homers twice but Eagles drop seesaw affair to Trojans
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite a two-homer day from Logan Floyd, Carson-Newman (9-9) came up on the wrong end of a back-and-forth affair against Trevecca Nazarene (13-5), losing 9-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Jackson Field.
"I thought offensively we were better today," Carson-Newman head coach Tom Griffin said. "When Logan Floyd does what he did today, certainly that helps. Everything he hit today was hard, even the ones he got out on. Some strikeouts at the plate hurt us, and we need to have guys making better pitch selections at the plate, especially when you get in a two-strike count. Freebies hurt us at times today as well. Defensively we were sharp, but we aren't putting all three facets, offense, pitching and defense all together consistently enough."
Logan Floyd (Adairsville, Ga.) led Carson-Newman's offensive effort with three hits, and registered his first career two-homer game . He drove in a team-high three RBI.
He is the first Eagle hitter to have a two-homer day since Ryan Jenkins did it versus Lincoln Memorial on March 1st this past season.
Braxton Smith (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Cole Nathan (Knoxville, Tenn.) each produced two-hit days for C-N.
After a one-out double, a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Trojans in the first. A fielder's choice and a Jaxon Christ base hit made it 2-0 Trojans after the first frame.
The Eagles would get one of those runs back in the top of the second. Cole Nathan (Knoxville, Tenn.) began the frame with a single and then a pair of walks loaded the bases for C-N. Nathan would come in to score on a Carson Cochran sac fly to make it a 2-1 game.
A scoreless second inning from Drew Fletcher (Waxhaw, N.C.) gave C-N momentum it would use in the third.
After a Maddox Greene (Deep Gap, N.C.) walk, Logan Floyd (Adairsville, Ga.) hammered a 2-2 fastball over the left field wall to give the Eagles their first lead of the day.
Since retiring the final out of the first, Fletcher went on to retire seven straight Trojans to keep C-N in front after three frames.
That changed in the fourth, as a leadoff double, hit by pitch and infield single loaded the bases with nobody out. A bases loaded walk tied the game and a fielder's choice put Trevecca back in front. McCain Mangum limited the damage, getting a groundout and strikeout to keep it a one-run game.
Carson-Newman answered right back in a big way. In his second consecutive at bat, Floyd would go yard. He drove an 0-2 fastball over the center field wall to level the score.

Bradley Soto Diaz, the next batter, followed suit. He launched an 0-2 fastball over the left field wall to give the Eagles lead back at 5-4.
The back and forth nature of the game continued into the bottom of the fifth. The Trojans loaded the bases with one out and would tie the game at 5 after a hit by pitch.
Alec Wilson (Baxter, Tenn.) entered the situation and helped C-N stay tied. He got back to back pop outs and got out of the bases loaded jam.
Carson-Newman would go back in front in the top of the sixth inning. Cochran blooped a double into right and Braxton Smith (Cleveland, Tenn.) followed with a single to make it first and third. Greene would break the tie, with a bloop single to right to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead.
Later in the frame, Soto Diaz would ground into a fielder's choice to help give C-N its first multi-run lead of the day at 7-5.
The game took another turn in the home half of the seventh. After a leadoff single, TNU's Rylan Moses homered to right to level the score at seven.
The fourth lead change of the game would occur later in the frame. The eight hitter Drew Bradley put the Trojans back in front 9-7 with a two-run blast with one out.
Carson-Newman's offense was sent down in order in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Eagles would pose a final threat in the ninth inning. Floyd began the top of the ninth with a double to right. Floyd was left at second and C-N's next three hitters were retired.
Despite an 11-hit performance, Carson-Newman was just two for 14 with runners in scoring position. It's only base hits that drove in runs were the three home runs.
Wilson suffered his second loss of the season, allowing the four runs that scored in the seventh.
Brock Culpepper (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Denver Slifka (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Harrison Shelton (Clinton, Tenn.) all had scoreless outings out of the bullpen.
TNU's final three pitchers tossed three scoreless innings with Tristan Seputis getting the win and Ryan Sweeney collecting his second save.
Four different Trojans produced multi-hit games, led by Cade Martin's three.
Carson-Newman returns to the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex for a home South Atlantic Conference series against #6 Catawba.
