JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The 2026 regular season concludes this weekend when Carson-Newman (28-17, 16-14 SAC) visits UVA Wise (11-33, 6-21) for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series beginning with a Friday doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
Because of weather on Saturday, the two clubs have adjusted the weekend schedule. A doubleheader will now be played Friday starting at 3. The series finale is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Carson-Newman can finish as high as fifth in the South Atlantic Conference standings when it's all set and done on Saturday. For the Eagles to finish fifth, they need to sweep UVA Wise this weekend and LMU would need to be swept by Lenoir-Rhyne on the road. LMU is two games ahead of C-N and owns any tiebreaker over the Eagles because of a series win. A sixth-place finish is a possibility as well. C-N is one game back of Newberry for that spot and wins a tiebreaker over the Wolves. Simply put, the Eagles just need to win one more game than Newberry does this weekend to move up to that spot. There are other complicated scenarios that could lead to the Eagles sliding up to six as well.
The Eagles are clicking in all phases of the game at the right time of the year. On the pitching side, they allowed their fewest runs in a weekend series this season, holding Coker to just nine across three wins. Offensively, C-N is coming off their most hits in a game and second-most runs in a game this season on Tuesday and has double-digit hits in six straight games including eight of the last nine. Defensively, some may say that's what has stood out the most recently. C-N has committed just two errors over its last six games and has turned multiple double plays in three straight games, including a season-high five on Tuesday. The five double plays turned by the Eagles against Shorter were the most in a game since recording five versus Catawba on February 23, 2008. Five double plays is tied for the most in game in the program's DII era.
C-N has matched its longest winning streak of the season for a third time, having won six games in a row for the third straight month. The winning streak is tied for the eighth-longest active streak in DII and tied for the second-longest among Southeast region schools. It's the longest current winning streak by any SAC school. This late regular season momentum build by the Eagles has them approaching another 30-win season. The program is two wins away from consecutive 30-win seasons for the first time since 2007 and 2008. Since 1990, C-N has produced consecutive 30-win years on five different occasions.
The all-time series heavily favors Carson-Newman. The Eagles have won 21 of the 25 meetings with three of UVA Wise's wins coming in the last eight meetings. This weekend's series will be just the second all-time conference series in Wise, Virginia. The Eagles lost two of three against the Cavaliers back in March of 2024.
UVA Wise knows that it is playing its final three baseball games of the season over the next two days. The Cavaliers are 11-33 this season and 6-21 in league play. They were eliminated from the SAC tournament after losing the series finale and series to Anderson over the weekend.
Despite being 22 games below .500, that record may be deceiving for how this club has played at times. They lost by just a run to #2 Catawba, the conference's regular season champions. They were swept by second place Wingate, but lost the three games by just a combined ten runs. Wise took a game from third-place #13 Lenoir-Rhyne, winning the middle game 4-2 and they beat fourth-place Lincoln Memorial with the two other losses coming by just a combined three runs. The Cavaliers have won just one conference series this season, taking two out of three games from Emory & Henry in the first series of the season back in mid-February. The home record for the Cavaliers this season is just 6-17, with the losses in their last five.
Patience has paid off for UVA Wise this season. 238 walks ranks third in the league and 30th nationally. Luke Johnson has 40 of them to lead the way, 17th most in DII. He also leads the club in batting average, hitting .363 in 2026. Jake Smith has also produced a good year at the dish, leading the team with 13 home runs and 35 RBI. He homered in four straight games earlier this month.
SAC Pitcher of the Week Ryan Whitson is Wise's best pitcher with a 4.65 ERA over 31 innings of work.
First pitch on Friday is set for 3:00 p.m. The weekend series can be heard on cneagles.com/live. Fans can also watch the radio crew at work with a feed of press row on YouTube.
