Carson-Newman was two outs away from being swept by Anderson, down by three runs in the ninth inning. But, two freshman clutched up and started a ninth inning comeback in which the Eagles scored eight times to rally for an 11-6 win on Sunday. Entering the game, Carson-Newman had lost 58 straight games when trailing after eight innings. It's just the program's eighth win in the past 11 seasons when trailing in the ninth inning. Down three runs in the ninth, it's C-N's biggest ninth-inning rally since rallying from a three-run deficit against Coker on April 20, 2019. The eight-run ninth is the most runs scored in an inning this season. Entering that game, C-N had just one run in a ninth inning all season.
The Eagles have done well in their non-conference games so far this season. C-N won its first seven non-league games before suffering a home loss to Lee last Tuesday. Logan Floyd leads an Eagles offense that averages just under 10 runs per game against out of conference teams. Floyd is hitting just under .600. C-N's pitching staff has just a 4.50 earned run average in eight non-conference games as well.
After going hitless in his C-N debut, Bradley Soto Diaz (Davenport, Fla.) has hit safely in 14 straight games. During this stretch, he has five multi-hit and three multi-RBI days. His .449 batting average is best on the team and fourth-best in the South Atlantic Conference.
Tuesday's meeting between the Trojans and Eagles will be just the 10th all-time meeting. The previous nine have come over the last 11 seasons. A series with just nine meetings has produced quite a variance in runs scored. There have been as many as 23 runs scored in a game, and as few as four (three times). TNU won the most recent meeting on March 26th last season, but it has never won consecutive games against the Eagles.
Carson-Newman will play its fourth straight game against "Trojans" when it takes the field in Nashville on Tuesday afternoon. Trevecca Nazarene will be C-N's third straight midweek Gulf South Conference opponent. TNU is 12-5 overall and has an 8-1 mark in GSC play. The Trojans dropped three of their first four games of the year, but have since won 11 of 13 entering Tuesday. In conference play, they have sweeps over Auburn Montgomery and this past weekend, Montevallo.
This will be TNU's third straight midweek game against a South Atlantic Conference team, but just the first at home. They went to Tusculum two weeks ago and won 9-5 and this past midweek was walked off by Lincoln Memorial after tying the game in the ninth inning.
Five regular starters in the Trojans batting order are hitting better than .320, led by Miles Nelson's .344 mark and Tusculum transfer Caleb Webster's .343 average. Webster has drove in a team-high 13 runs, with four others also having at least 10 this season. It's a lineup that has seen nine different players combine to hit 12 home runs.
On the pitching side, TNU is coming off a weekend sweep of Montevallo in which it only allowed two runs over 23 innings in the series. Since allowing 14 and 16 runs in their first two games, only four teams have scored seven or more runs on Trevecca Nazarene. Parker Davis has drawn a couple midweek starts, but has just a 9.53 era. The Trojans have three relievers that have pitched in multiple games and not allowed a run, led by Dawson Sweeney's 5 1/3 scoreless innings in three outings. Justin Lee and Ryan Sweeney both have double-digit innings pitched as relievers and have sub 3 earned run marks.
First pitch is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. eastern time (3:00 central time). A live stream of the contest is available with a subscription to FloSports at cneagles.com/flobase.
