JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – South Atlantic Conference play continues this weekend as Carson-Newman (21-16, 11-13 SAC) visits Mars Hill (19-19-1, 14-9-1 SAC) for a three-game series starting Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
For the last month of the regular season, Carson-Newman has been locked into seventh place in the league. Although the Eagles can't entirely move out of seventh with a series sweep this weekend, it would go a long way to eventually making the move up. Mars Hill is sixth place in the league with a 14-9-1 mark, a 3.5 game edge on C-N.
This weekend's matchup shapes up as an intriguing one. The Eagles are back on the road where they've had great success this season. They are 11-6 away from Mossy Creek this season and have won seven of their last eight road games. In conference play, C-N is 7-5 on the road. On the flipside, only two conference teams have collected a win at MHU's Henderson Field this season. Coker won the conference opener 3-2 at MHU and Lenoir-Rhyne won 9-1. Those are the only two home conference losses for Mars Hill this season. They have won nine straight home games, six straight SAC home games and are 12-3-1 this season. Their nine-game home winning streak is tied for the third longest active home winning streak in DII. It's the longest by three games in the Southeast Region.
Since the start of March, Carson-Newman has compiled a 13-8 record. All eight of those losses have come by three runs or less. Overall, 12 of the team's 16 losses this season have come by just three runs or less.
The Eagles have started April, the same exact way they started a strong month of March. C-N lost three of its first four games in March, before closing the month with wins in 11 of its last 13 games.
Junior infielder Logan Floyd (Adairsville, Ga.) continues to etch himself as one of the best hitters in program history. He has 189 career hits, 11 away from becoming the first Eagle hitter with 200 hits since Tyler Thompson finished with 213 in 2021. Floyd has 142 career RBI and is a career .372 hitter. Floyd has also reached base safely in 20 straight games and his 17 doubles lead the South Atlantic Conference this season.
Junior infielder Cole Nathan (Knoxville, Tenn.) has reached base safely in 25 straight games, the longest on-base streak by a player for C-N this season. It's a career-long on-base streak for Nathan as well. During his on-base streak he has 27 hits and 20 RBI.
Carson-Newman will look to have continued success against the Lions this weekend. The Eagles lead the all-time series 67-35 and have won 12 of the last 15 meetings. Interestingly enough, this weekend's three game series at Mars Hill will be the first three-game series at Henderson Field since 2015. C-N made trips to MHU in 2017, 2019 and 2022 but only played two-game sets. C-N's last series win at MHU was in 2011.
Mars Hill has been one of the better stories in the South Atlantic Conference this season. The Lions were picked second to last (11th) in the conference's preseason poll, and have been in the top eight of the league standings all season. Their 19-19-1 record this season is already five more wins than all of last season and matches their 19-win total from 2018-19. One win this weekend will give the Lions their first 20-win season since 2017-18.
First-place #3 Catawba and second-place Wingate are the only two clubs defeat MHU in a three-game series this season. The Lions have series wins over Coker, Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum with sweeps over Anderson and UVA Wise. MHU tied a home series with Lenoir-Rhyne back in March because the series finale was called to due darkness with the game tied at 5.
Head coach Zach Honeycutt's team is last in the conference in batting average (.243), on-base percentage (.377), scoring (5.0) and hits (279). They only rank top five in the SAC in three categories. First in hit by pitches (80), third in hits allowed per 9/IP (9.39) and fifth in SAC bunts (22).
First pitch in Friday's series opener is scheduled for 2:00 pm. A video stream of the weekend series is available with a subscription to FloSports at cneagles.com/flobase.
