JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the first time in 2025, Carson-Newman (0-2-2) will battle a ranked opponent when it travels to Montgomery, Alabama for a non-conference tilt with No. 25 Auburn Montgomery (2-1-1).
Carson-Newman has another opportunity to secure win number one in 2025. The Eagles fared closely in all four contests this season, but have suffered two 1-1 ties and two 2-1 losses.
Ben Dukes and Mitchell Honcoop have paced Carson-Newman's offense through four games. Dukes scored goals in the first two games, and Honcoop has scored a goal in each of the last two games to make up Carson-Newman's four goals this season. The team has scored exactly one in each game this season.
Tomorrow's match continues a road stretch in which the Eagles play five of their first six games on the road to start the 2025 season. The match also will be an opportunity to snap struggles on the road. Over the past two seasons, C-N is 2-14-5 on the road and has failed to win its last seven road trips.
Auburn Montgomery will be Carson-Newman's fourth non-conference game, which all have been against teams from the Gulf South Conference. Under head coach Stephen Lyons, the Eagles are 7-7-7 against GSC opponents.
The Eagles will face a ranked team for the first time this season. Stephen Lyons led teams are 4-8-2 against the top 25. Carson-Newman's last road win of a ranked team came in October of 2019, defeating Coker 1-0 in double overtime.
Carson-Newman and Auburn Montgomery have played to scoreless ties in each of the past two meetings. It's been 200 minutes of game action, spanning the three all-time meetings in which a goal has been scored. A 70th minute goal in the first-ever meeting in 2022, lifted the Warhawks to a 2-1 win in Mossy Creek.
Reigning GSC tournament champion Auburn Montgomery was selected to finish second in this year's GSC men's soccer preseason poll. Almost each position was recognized on the preseason All-GSC teams. Defender Jamie Ward, midfielder Sean Keane and forward Benjamin Hoffmann were AUM's preseason selections.
Through two weeks, AUM has produced some mixed results. It opened the 2025 season with a 3-1 road win over St. Leo, but two days later saw its Florida trip end with a 2-1 loss to Tampa. SAC foe Wingate was shut out by the Warhawks 3-0 last Thursday in AUM's home opener. AUM finished the week with a 1-1 tie to Lander on Saturday.
Benjamin Hoffman is Auburn Montgomery's best offensive player. He is tied for the team lead in goals with 2, while also adding an assist. His 11 shots are six more than anyone else on the team. The Warhawks are averaging two goals per match, ranking fourth in the GSC. Six different players have scored a goal and eight have contributed at least one point.
AUM has rotated through three goalkeepers in its first four games of the 2025 season. Viktor Rosenkrantz and Matteo Maccagni each have played 135 minutes in goal, with Rosenkrantz having started twice. Brock Marlow started versus Wingate and made two saves in a shutout victory. Rosenkrantz started in AUM's only loss of the year.
Matthew Thorne's team has been 16 yellow cards through four games, third-most in DII. They have been shown at least four yellow cards in three of the four games and one that has resulted in a red card.
