Late goals hurt C-N in SAC quarterfinals against E&H
EMORY, Va. – Just like the regular season meeting, Emory & Henry (8-3-5) scored late to defeat Carson-Newman (3-10-3) 2-0 in the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Sunday night at the Food City Sports Complex.

The loss for Carson-Newman is its fourth straight in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament.
The first chance of the match was an E&H corner kick in the fifth minute. The Carson-Newman defense handled the sequence well and did not allow a shot.
E&H would get a second corner kick in the 14th minute but the Eagles once again defended well and headed the in-swinging ball away from the box.
The game's first shot was from the Wasps in the 18th minute. Noah Serwy tried his hand from the center of the pitch but missed over top of goal.
Carson-Newman's first shot of the match was on a free kick in the 22nd minute. Tim Haans' shot toward frame was stopped by E&H goalie Baptise Berthozat.
On E&H's fourth corner of the first half, C-N goalkeeper Elijah Buford was tasked with making his first save. Samuel Ulrich's shot from inside the box was kept out of net by Buford.
The Wasps would go on to take five more corners to total nine in the opening half but did not truly threaten on any of them.
E&H's Milan Ales attempted the final shot of the half. It came from more than 20 yards outside the box and Buford made a routine save to keep the first half scoreless.
Ben Dukes (Southampton, England) attempted the first shot after halftime in the 49th minute. His chance from inside the box was blocked by a Wasps defender.
The Wasps would take five shots over the next 14 minutes of play but never of them hit the target. The closest attempt was a 64th-minute shot off the left post by Grayson Cunningham.
Cunningham attempted another shot in the 67th minute, but it was from far away and Buford made another routine stop.
E&H's constant possession and pressure forward eventually led to a goal in the 76th minute. Off a long throw in, Leo Mimbele dished off a short pass to Gonzalez Barrio who booted a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 Wasps.
The Wasps would put the game away in the 84th minute. Noah Serwy dribbled his way into the box and was fouled, and the officials granted E&H a penalty kick. Serwy took the PK and buried the shot in the bottom right corner to make it 2-0.
Off the bench, Bink Groothuijs led Carson-Newman in shots with two, all of which came in the final 10 minutes of the match. Four others combined for C-N's six shots in the match with two of them going on target.
Emory & Henry finished the match with 11 corner kicks. It's the first time a C-N opponent has recorded double-digit corner kicks in a match since Anderson had 13 back on October 9, 2021.
The loss for Carson-Newman ends its season at 3-10-3.
