JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (3-9-3, 3-6-1 SAC) scored its latest goal of the season at the best time. Antoine Torrent booted home an 86th minute to lift C-N past Tusculum 2-1 on Wednesday night at McCown Field.
The Eagles were in a must-win scenario and got help to qualify for the South Atlantic Conference tournament which begins this weekend.
"Really credit the guys tonight," Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons said. "Those first 35 minutes we created many chances. We probably could have been two or three up. At halftime, we just talked about stepping back on the right foot like we did to start. We had some guys playing in new positions and I thought they really stepped up. Great to get the win."
Carson-Newman extends a streak in the series with Tusculum in which the home team has won each of the past five meetings.
The win for C-N is its first at home and just its third one-goal win in nine tries this season.
It took eight minutes before either side attempted a shot. It was TU that took shot, a header from Filippo Canaletich off a free kick that was saved by C-N goalie Elijah Buford.
Carson-Newman's first shot was the game's first goal. The Eagles possessed the ball well in the attacking third. After a clean tackle on Antoine Torrent, the ball went to the feet of a Lucas Trull in the penalty area. He dished off a pass to Rhydian Williams who crushed a left-footed shot into the upper right corner of goal to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute.

Torrent and Williams would threaten goal once each as the first half continued. In the 28th minute, Torrent's attempt toward the center of goal was saved by TU goalie Donovan Cobb. Seven minutes later, Williams crushed another left-footed shot toward the bottom left corner of goal and forced Cobb into a diving stop.
Tusculum's second shot on goal was an equalizing goal in the 39th minute. Jean Grah dribbled past two C-N defenders and reversed field with a pass to Mason Clark who beat Buford in a 1v1 to level the match just before intermission.
C-N would continue to gain more of the possession but through 16 minutes was held without a shot on frame. The Eagles had two corner kicks and three shots during that stretch.
The game's first shot on frame of the second half wasn't until the 75th minute. Carlos Perez had a shot toward the bottom right side saved by Buford to keep things level.
TU's Cobb would answer Buford's save in just a minute later. He saved a Thomas LaChapelle header toward the center of goal. The Eagles had two other shots go wide during that same sequence forward.
Torrent had a great chance in the 82nd minute but was unlucky on his attempt to the center and watched Cobb make his final stop of the night.
Carson-Newman's season-high eighth corner would result in the game-winner. Mitchell Honcoop's corner kick was a perfect one into the center of the six-yard box. Tusculum had trouble clearing and the chaos in the box led to Torrent getting a chance and he slotted a shot into an open net to put the Eagles ahead with less than five minutes to play.

Tusculum only had one corner kick and it led to the its only shot the rest of the way.
The Eagles surpassed their season-high in shots for the second consecutive match, attempting to TU's 12. Seven of C-N's were on target to Tusculum's four.
Pushing and shoving after the buzzer sounded led to four cards being issued. Three were red cards to two TU players and another to a C-N player. Overall, there were 11 cards handed out and three red cards total with the reds all coming post-match.
The win and a Newberry loss helped secure Carson-Newman the seventh seed in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The Eagles are matched up with two-seeded Emory & Henry in the opening round. The match is scheduled for Sunday November 9th at 6:30 p.m. in Emory, Virginia. A video stream of the match will be available on FloSports with a subscription at cneagles.com/floFc.
