Final road game sends C-N to Wingate
Carson-Newman (1-8-3, 1-5-1 SAC) gears up for its final road game of the regular season as it heads to Wingate (2-6-3, 2-2-3 SAC) Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (1-8-3, 1-5-1 SAC) gears up for its final road game of the regular season as it heads to Wingate (2-6-3, 2-2-3 SAC) Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Despite losses in back-to-back games, Carson-Newman is still within reach for a South Atlantic Conference tournament berth. The Eagles have four points, but fifth-place Wingate only has nine points. Teams slotted 5-11 in the SAC standings are all within five points of one another. Teams six through eight are Newberry, Mars Hill and Tusculum all with just seven points. The top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament.
The Eagles played one of their rarest games in recent history on Wednesday. The 4-3 loss to Lincoln Memorial was the highest scoring game by South Atlantic Conference teams this season and the highest in the series since 2003. It's the first time in the Lyons era that his team scored three goals or more and did not win or at least tie. It's the first time since 2009 that the Eagles scored three goals or more and lost. That was a 4-3 loss to USC Aiken. Over the past 16 seasons, Carson-Newman was 73-0-1 when scoring three goals or more.
Sophomore forward Antoine Torrent recorded his first career brace in the one-goal loss last time out. He scored both his goals in the second half, 18 minutes apart. His goals gave C-N the lead both times. Torrent is the first Eagle with a multi-goal game since Ben Dukes' hat trick night last October versus Newberry. He is the first Eagle player with multiple goals on the road since Thaylan Silva's two-goal game at Newberry on October 16, 2021.
Carson-Newman has four players that have started all 11 games this season Dan Coles, Ben Dukes, Isaac Pascal and Maxime Wester, but none more reliable than Coles. The junior is the only Eagle that has not left the field in 12 games, playing the full 1,080 minutes possible this season.
C-N defeated WU in last season's meeting in Jefferson City. The Eagles scored a pair of first half goals and survived a WU second half goal to win 2-1. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 20-14-7 and have wins in four of their last five home meetings against C-N.
Wingate has the second-lowest winning percentage among South Atlantic Conference schools but ranks fifth in the league's standings heading into Saturday's contest because both of its wins this season are in conference games. The Bulldogs have a 2-6-3 overall record and are 2-2-3 in league play this season. The year began with three consecutive losses in non-conference play but responded in game four by defeating Tusculum 4-1 in the SAC opener. Two more losses were responded with a 1-0 home win over Lincoln Memorial on October 4th. Since that win, WU lost 2-0 to Lenoir-Rhyne and has played to ties in three games versus #4 Anderson, Catawba and Newberry.
The tie with Newberry on Wednesday was just as chaotic as C-N's game. WU scored with 95 seconds. Just 21 seconds after taking the late lead, the Bulldogs fouled a Wolves player in the penalty area, leading to an equalizing goal with just 74 seconds left.
At home this year, head coach Gary Hamill's club is 1-2-1. Coach Hamill is in his 33rd season leading Wingate's soccer program, the seventh-longest tenured coach in DII. Among active head coaches, he ranks fifth in all-time career wins with 386.
The Bulldogs are tied with Mars Hill for the fewest goals in the South Atlantic Conference this season, but they have scored two goals in each of their past two games. Four of their 10 goals in 2025 came in a 4-1 road win over TU to start SAC play. Joakim Gunnar leads WU's offense with three goals in just four starts.
Two goalkeepers have split time in the net for WU in 2025. All five of Luka Srzic's starts came in September, allowing 12 goals and making just seven saves. Quincy Gibbs has started the past six games and has posted two shutouts. He has 30 saves, allowing just more than a goal per game.
First touch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from Pride Park. A video stream of the match is available with a subscription to FloSports at cneagles.com/FloMsoc.
