HARROGATE, Tenn. – In the highest scoring game of the South Atlantic Conference season, it was Lincoln Memorial (5-7-1, 5-2-1 SAC) overcoming a pair of deficits to defeat Carson-Newman (1-8-3, 1-5-1 SAC) 4-3 on Wednesday night in Harrogate.
"Obviously disappointed to not win or get a point when you score three goals," Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons said. "Individual errors cost us tonight and that has been a consistent theme unfortunately. The mentality of players to come back from behind was brillant, but not being able to hold on through simple mistakes is frustrating. We will keep going all the way and move onto Saturday."
The seven combined goals scored was the most in this series since 2003, a 4-3 C-N win that year.
The loss for the Eagles is the club's fifth one-goal loss of the season.
It's the first time in the Lyons era that his team scored three goals or more and did not win or at least tie. It's the first time since 2009 that the Eagles scored three goals or more and lost. That was a 4-3 loss to USC Aiken. Over the past 16 seasons, Carson-Newman was 73-0-1 when scoring three goals or more.
Antoine Torrent (Clermont ferrand, France) scored two of Carson-Nemwan's three goals. It's the sophomore's first career brace, as he entered the game with just three career goals.
The first three shots of the match came from Carson-Newman. In the second minute, Antoine Torrent had a shot blocked. Two other shots came in the fifth and ninth minutes but missed the target.
Lincoln Memorial would attempt the next two shots, with the second finding the back of the net. A ball played into the middle of the field found the feet of Gian-Carlo Kama. The attacker took a touch to his right and fired a long distance shot into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0 Railsplitters in the 16th minute.
Carson-Newman would quickly equalize thanks to great effort. A cross toward the back post went past Rhydian Williams, but he hustled after the ball to keep it in play, forcing LMU to head it away. That header went right to Isaac Pascal who crushed a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner to even the match in the 20th minute.
The goal for Pascal was his first of the year and the third of his C-N career. The Eagles continued to ride that first half momentum and it led to more scoring opportunities. Ben Dukes attempted the only shot that went on goal, seeing LMU goalie Daniel Benedek Miklosi make his first save in the 31st minute.
The Eagles would outshoot LMU 7-6 in the first 45 minutes, with a slim 2-1 advantage on goal.
C-N would take the lead early in the second half. On a cross into the six-yard box, there was chaos created in the box on the header attempt by Mitchell Honcoop. The ball ricocheted right to Antoine Torrent, and the sophomore buried a shot into the back of the net to give the Eagles the 2-1 advantage in the 52nd minute.
Just as Carson-Newman did, LMU would quickly answer to level the match. Six minutes after the C-N goal, the Railsplitters scored off a corner kick. The corner was initially deflected by Buford, but was not cleared away and allowed Paul Yu to score from close range and the match was level in the 58th minute.
Once again, Carson-Newman regained the lead and it was Torrent again. 12 minutes later, Buford would launch a goal kick across midfield where Mitchell Honcoop headed right in stride to Torrent. The sophomore raced right past LMU's central defenders and slotted a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner to put C-N ahead again in the 70th minute.
Lincoln Memorial continued to respond and take advantage of its corner kicks. Off its fifth corner, C-N had trouble clearing the ball from the six-yard box and Kama found space to rocket a shot into the upper right part of goal to even the match at three in the 75th minute.
Kama completed his first career hat trick just five minutes after his second goal. A ball was lifted forward by the Railsplitters, allowing Kama to race after it. Tracking the ball with a defender in front, Kama eventually gained possession and booted his third goal into the net in the 80th minute. It's the second straight game an opposing player has recorded a hat trick.
The Eagles possessed the ball well in the final 10 minutes but it only led to one shot. Torrent took aim from the left side of the box but missed wide right in the 85th minute.
LMU outshot C-N 13-12, but the shots on goal were an even 4-4. All five of Lincoln Memorial's corner kicks came in the second half.
Carson-Newman plays its final road game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Wingate. First touch from Wingate, North Carolina is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
