#25 AUM gets past C-N
#25 Auburn Montomgery (3-1-1) scored a goal in each half to defeat Carson-Newman (0-3-2) 2-0 on Wednesday evening at AUM’s Soccer Complex.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – #25 Auburn Montomgery (3-1-1) scored a goal in each half to defeat Carson-Newman (0-3-2) 2-0 on Wednesday evening at AUM's Soccer Complex.
"We cannot continue to make basic errors one may expect to see at a youth level," Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons said. "At our level, good teams punish you and that happened again today. We also need to have more end product in the final third. The effort was very good again, but we need to be better collectively."
Auburn Montgomery scored the game's first goal in the 13th minute and it came off a counterattack. C-N came up empty on a free kick and AUM cleared and went the other way. Robiston Lukau dribbled into the attacking half and left a pass off for Noah Fernandes who buried a shot into the low center of goal to make it 1-0 Warhawks in 13th minute.
Carson-Newman would begin applying more of the offensive pressure as the half went on. Mitchell Honcoop and Ben Dukes combined to take the game's next five shots. Dukes' second forced AUM goalkeeper Matteo Maccagni into his first save in the 30th minute.
AUM took the final two shots of the half, missing wide right on both attempts in the 34th and 41st minutes.
The Eagles offense had more of the chances but could not find an equalizer. Making his C-N debut, Reynaldo Romo had a 59th minute shot blocked.
The Warhawks would go the other way and pad to the lead. Robiston helped set up another AUM goal, finding Benjamin Hoffman who slotted a shot into the lower right corner of goal to extend the AUM advantage.
Following that second goal, C-N would go on to take six of the final eight shots, three that went on goal.
Maxime Wester (Brussel, Belgium) ripped his first shot of the match toward goal, forcing Maccagni to make his second save in the 69th minute.
Also making his season debut, Corey Pennington had a pair of his shots saved in the same sequence, a second shot that was saved by a AUM defender heading it away.
Honcoop would fire the final two shots. The first was on target in the 79th minute and Maccagni made his fourth and final save of the match. With 23 seconds remaining, his final shot missed high.
Lucas Trull, Corey Pennington, Reynaldo Romo and Jay Whyatt all made their season debuts in the match. Romo's 35 minutes were the most of the bunch.
Carson-Newman outshot Auburn Montgomery 12-10 and five to four on goal. Dukes and Honcoop combined for eight of those 12 shots.
Elijah Buford (Atlanta, Ga.) made saves on two of the four shots that came toward target.
Maccagni made four saves to earn his second win of the year.
Carson-Newman concludes the week with another road trip, heading to Coker on Saturday. First touch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. A video steam is available with a subscription to FloSports.
