Final non-conference game brings C-N and Montevallo together
Carson-Newman (0-4-2) returns home Monday afternoon for its final non-conference contest of 2025, when it welcomes Montevallo (0-2-2) to McCown Field for the first time since 1996.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (0-4-2) returns home Monday afternoon for its final non-conference contest of 2025, when it welcomes Montevallo (0-2-2) to McCown Field for the first time since 1996.
Carson-Newman has been competitive through its first six games, but is still looking for its first win. It's the first time since 2002 that the Eagles are winless six games into the year. Five of the six matches have been decided by one goal or less.
The Eagles are 0-2-2 in non-conference affairs this season, all of which have been road games. They currently have a six-match unbeaten streak in non-conference home games, with the last loss coming to Auburn Montgomery on October 18, 2022.
Ben Dukes and Mitchell Honcoop have been Carson-Newman's only source of offense through six games. Dukes scored goals in the first two games, and Honcoop scored a goal in the next two games to make up Carson-Newman's four goals this season. C-N scored exactly one goal in the first four games and has been shutout in its past two contests.
Carson-Newman breaks up a heavy-road start to begin the 2025 season. Monday's match will be C-N's second and last home game in the month of September. Starting tomorrow, the Eagles will play five of their next nine contests at McCown Field. In head coach Stephen Lyons' tenure, C-N has gone 34-19-11 when playing at home.
Every possible result has occurred in the three all-time meetings between Carson-Newman and Montevallo. A series with just three meetings dates all the way back to 1995, when C-N left Montevallo with a 1-0 win in overtime. 1996 was the only home meeting for C-N in this series, a match that ended in a 1-1 tie.
For the second straight game, Carson-Newman will matchup against a team that is winless in 2025. The Falcons have played four matches this season, recording two losses and two ties. 18 days ago, Montevallo opened the year with a 1-1 tie on the road against Francis Marion. Staying on the road, it made the trek to Mars Hill, suffering a 4-3 loss. In the loss to the Lions, Montevallo scored three times in 19 minutes to take the lead. But later, would concede two goals in the final 14 minutes.
The best result of the year came in the home opener. Montevallo played to a scoreless tie with #4 Anderson and outshot the Trojans in the match. Nine days ago, No. 16 Nova Southeastern dominated the Falcons winning 4-1.
The Falcons were selected to finish tied for eighth in the Gulf South Conference's Preseason Coaches' Poll. Sebastian Flores is the top returning player for Montevallo. The defender was named to the Preseason All-GSC team.
Head coach Bruce Dietterle's team has scored five goals in four games led by Dominic Kienzle's three. The German forward scored two of his three goals against Mars Hill, with the other coming last time out versus #16 Nova Southeastern. Dakota Hart and Will Mashburn have scored the other goals for the Falcons. Overall, five different Falcons have contributed at least one point in four games.
Andre Etcheverry has started all four games in goal for Montevallo. He has allowed nine goals and has made saves on just 53 percent of shots toward goal. The junior goalkeeper has allowed four goals in two of the four matches early in the year.
Statistically, Montevallo ranks top 15 nationally in fouls per game committing nearly nine per match. It ranks last in the GSC in shot accuracy, with just 34 percent of its shots hitting the target.
