JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman finishes its September slate when it visits red-hot Newberry (4-0-1, 1-0-1 SAC) for a South Atlantic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
Carson-Newman heads to Newberry hoping to collect its first win of the season. C-N has been in every match this year, with five of the seven matches having been decided by one goal or less.
Carson-Newman is unbeaten all-time in its 31 meetings versus Newberry. Two of those contests ended in ties, most recently in 2018 in a game played at Newberry that finished in a 2-2 draw. Since then, C-N has won the past five matches, and has done so, outscoring the Wolves 18-3. Four of those four wins have seen Carson-Newman score at least three goals.
Last season's 8-0 annihilation of the Wolves was the most goals the program has scored under Stephen Lyons in game, surpassing the seven his 2019 team scored versus North Greenville. The eight goals were the most in a game since scoring 9 goals versus Cumberland (TN) in 2007 and was the sixth-most in a single-game in program history. The nine assists and 25-point performance were both the third-most in a single-game in program history.
Mitchell Honcoop (Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands) has been one of the best goal scorers in the South Atlantic Conference this season. The All-SAC midfielder has three goals this season, tied for second-most in the league this season. The Dutchmen now has 10 goals in his career, tied for most among active Eagles.
No player in the South Atlantic Conference has more saves than goalkeeper Elijah Buford (Atlanta, Ga) The junior's 30 stops are most in the SAC, and 10 more than any other goalkeeper in the league. That mark also ranks 14th nationally.
For the first time in program history, Newberry is unbeaten through the first five games of a season. This surpasses the 2003 team, which started 4-0 before suffering a loss in its fifth match of the year. This year's Wolves are 4-0-1 and enter Saturday's match winners of three straight games. The win streak has spanned 10 days, starting with a pair of 2-1 wins over Southern Wesleyan and Tusculum last week. It has continued into this week, defeating Shaw 6-0 on Wednesday. Newberry is one of 29 teams still without a loss in DII this season.
To no surprise. Newberry ranks highly in many categories early in the year. The Wolves have a +11-goal differential, best in the SAC and fifth best in DII. A high goal differential usually indicates a quality number of goals, and that is exactly the case with Newberry. It has scored a league-high 14 goals to go along with a league-high 11 assists. Head coach Justin Cook's team has been extremely effective with its shot attempts, seeing more than half of them hit the target, the highest percentage in the SAC this season as well.
Defensively, the Wolves have been just as strong. Goalkeeper Charlie Clark has stopped 87 percent of the shots his way, highest mark in the league and 12th best nationally through five games. He ranks second behind Buford in saves and has the second-best goals against average mark in the league as well.
Newberry's scoring has been all about balance. Giuseppe Gereau leads the way with his three goals scored, but three others have scored multiple times. Overall, nine different players have combined to score the 14 goals and 13 players have recorded at least one point. The Wolves offense has scored multiple goals in five straight gamest to start the year, its longest such streak since 2007.
First touch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. from the Smith Road Complex in Newberry, South Carolina. A video stream of the match is available with a subscription to FloSports.
