NEWBERRY, S.C. – Annika Fend assisted both of Carson-Newman's (5-3, 1-2 SAC) goals to help secure its second straight road win, taking down previously unbeaten Newberry (5-1-1, 1-1 SAC) 2-1 on Saturday night at the Smith Road Complex.
"Delighted with the performance and the result," Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "These are the types of games that last year, we unfortunately didn't get a result in. So, I am thrilled for the players to be able to see it out and get that second goal. It's been a tough month of September, especially playing a fifth game on the road.
Carson-Newman has begun another winning streak with the one-goal win. In all five wins, Duffy's squad has scored multiple goals. The Eagles improve to astounding 75-2-5 when scoring two or more goals under Duffy.
This marks C-N's third win on the road in 2025, already surpassing last season's win total in road affairs.
A road win also secured C-N its 10th win in the past 11 meetings with Newberry and have outscored the Wolves 22-7 during this eleven-game stretch.
Entering Saturday's play, Newberry was one of just 37 DII teams still unbeaten and one of two teams to not have allowed a goal this season. C-N ended both of those marks with the 2-1 win.
Carson-Newman capitalized on its first scoring chance in the 11th minute. Annika Fend (Herxheim, Germany) lifted a cross into the six-yard box and Molly Bukiewicz (Beavercreek, Ohio) headed the ball into the lower left part of goal to make it 1-0.
On Newberry's second shot, it found an equalizer. Mikaela Warburton sent a ground pass into the box and Molly Quartly sprinted to it and slotted a shot toward the bottom left corner to level things in the 23rd minute.
After each team scored, chances were minimal the rest of the first half. C-N's first shot after the Newberry goal was from Selina Jud (Wilderswil, Switzerland) who missed high in the 33rd minute.
One of C-N's better opportunities came late in the first half. Brooke Bolton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) sent a shot toward the lower left part of goal but Wolves goalkeeper Madison Gutierrez made the stop in the 42nd minute.
Newberry took just one more shot in the first half, missing off to the right and the match was level at intermission.
There was just one shot in the first 17 minutes of the second half. Jud missed high in the 53rd minute.
As the half went along, C-N warmed up with its offensive chances. Elysia Teske (Augusta, Ga.) took the first shot on frame after halftime, seeing Gutierrez stop it in the center of goal.
Jud continued to be a threat forward, and saw Gutierrez stop another shot in the 72nd minute.
Shortly later, the Eagles would regain the lead. Fend once again up one of her teammates. From the right side of the field, the senior defender sent a 40-yard cross into the box that was headed by Jud toward the right side of goal to make it 2-1 C-N in the 75th minute.
Newberry's best opportunity to equalize came in the 77th minute. Avalina Espinoza saw her shot toward the lower right corner of goal saved by C-N goalkeeper Berna Kabakci (Zeddam, Netherlands). That was Kabakci's only save of the night, but one that sealed a C-N road win.
C-N outshot Newberry 13-6 and five to two on goal. The Eagles also held a three to one advantage in corner kicks.
Jud took five of Carson-Newman's shots, while seven others attempted at least one as well.
Carson-Newman is back in action on Wednesday, beginning the month of October at home versus Emory & Henry. First touch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from McCown Field. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network is available with a subscription to FloSports.
