JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (3-1) extended its win streak on Saturday evening by defeating Gulf South Conference opponent Trevecca Nazarene (2-2) 2-0 at McCown Field.
"I thought from both teams, it wasn't the sharpest," Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "Just glad we were able to come into halftime up 1-0, because it could've easily been tied or worst case scenario they are up. We needed to be a bit sharper in the second half, stop the sloppy passes. I'm glad we were able to do that."
Carson-Newman has won three straight games and has outscored its opponents 11-1 during the stretch. This marks the tenth time in the past 11 seasons that the Eagles have at least one three-game winning streak during the regular season.
In each of Coach Duffy's nine seasons, his teams have posted clean sheets in back-to-back games at least one time each season. This year's team has accomplished just that and shutouts in back-to-back games. It's the 11th straight season the Eagles have clean sheets in back to back contests.
The Eagles unbeaten streak over the Trojans extends to five straight, with four wins during the stretch.
The light continues to shine on Carson-Newman's most experienced player Molly Bukiewicz (Beavercreek, Ohio). Scoring a first half goal, the sixth year player has now scored a goal in each of the past three games, four total during the stretch. She is the first Eagle to score in three straight games since Magda Mosengo scored in three straight games during postseason play in 2018.
"It's been great for her," Duffy said. "It's been awhile coming and I'm sure she will tell you that too. She has been here awhile with us and we think a lot of Molly. Just glad she is now seeing those kinds of results. As a forward, if you aren't able to put the ball in the back of the net, you know inside you can do more. The consistency has been so key."
The first opportunities came off corner kicks. Each team took one in the first nine minutes but no shots came from it.
TNU controlled much of the first half. They took the game's first five shots. It was until the third attempt, where Dani Witsman ventured behind the defense and forced Berna Kabacki (Zeddam, Netherlands) into her first save. The junior keeper was elite 12 minutes later. Cristina Escudero fired a shot toward the center of goal but Kabakci made her second save.
Carson-Newman's only shot of the opening half, and scored off of it. Molly Bukiewicz (Beavercreek, Ohio) sprinted behind the defense and attempted a cross, but she had it deflected. Fortunately, it came right back to her and the second time she ripped a shot toward the center of goal to beat the keeper in the 43rd minute.
Kabakci kept it scoreless just before halftime, stopping Katie Whiting's shot to keep the Eagles ahead 1-0 at intermission.
It took more than 12 minutes for either team to attempt a shot. It came from Carson-Newman in the 58th minute from Malia Kim (Clinton, Tenn.). TNU goalkeeper Bailie Fiore made her first stop to keep it within a goal.
The Eagles defense fared well early in the second half. TNU's first shot didn't come until the 69th minute, Anna Farrell missed the target.
C-N had two nice chances to extend the lead in the 76th minute. Kim and Frick had shots blocked and stopped by Fiore.
Trevecca Nazarene's final two shots came less than 40 seconds. Both Farrell and Luiza Maria Rocha had shots go away from the target.
Carson-Newman would seal the win in the final two minutes. Selina Jud (Wilderswil, Switzerland) was fouled just outside the box to setup a free kick.
Felicia Frick (Eschen, Liechtenstein) lined up the free kick and booted a left-footed shot, around the TNU goalkeeper and into the back of the net to seal a 2-0 win.
The game featured just 16 shots, with TNU holding a 9-7 advantage. However, C-N saw five of its seven shots hit the target.
Seven different Trojans attempted a shot, led by Farrell's two.
Carson-Newman stays at home, playing host to Catawba on Wednesday evening. First touch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. A video stream is available with a subscription to FloSports at cneagles.com/floWsoc.
