WINGATE, N.C. – When Molly Bukiewicz scores, Carson-Newman wins. That was the case for the seventh time in 2025 as the graduate student scored her eighth goal of the year in the 53rd minute to lift the Eagles (7-4-2, 3-3-2 SAC) to a 1-0 victory over Wingate (8-5, 4-4 SAC) on Saturday afternoon at Pride Park.
"Delighted to finally get the result when we play so well," Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "Especially for our seniors, who have not been able to get the result over Wingate in their time."
The win for Carson-Newman extends its road unbeaten streak to four games, the longest for the program since 2023. C-N is now 4-2-1 on the road this season, its most road wins in a season since 2023 as well.
Carson-Newman snaps a four-game losing streak against Wingate. The Bulldogs had multi-goal victories in three of their four wins heading into the match. The road win for C-N is its first at Wingate since September 18, 2021, also a 1-0 victory.
It was the Eagles applying more of the offensive pressure in the first several minutes. Selina Jud missed right in the 6th minute, but the Eagles stayed forward. After forcing a turnover, C-N managed to get a corner kick and it led to the first shot on target. A great corner kick into the center of the six-yard box found Molly Bukieiwicz (Beavercreek, Ohio) who had her shot attempted saved by Wingate keeper Amelia Forsling.
Carson-Newman had an excellent scoring chance in the 29th minute. Off its third corner of the first half, Elly Leander (Clinton, Tenn.) headed the ball of the left post, just narrowly missing goal.
A fourth corner kick led to two more shots in the 36th minute. After a Sifa Morgan (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot was blocked, it ricocheted to Irish Miles (Augusta, Ga.) whose long-distance was saved by Forsling.
Making her first career start, Olivia Henry (Knoxville, Tenn.) was tested for the first time in the 38th minute. A turnover in the defensive half led to a Tilde Wahrenberg shot that saved thanks to a diving effort by Henry.
Henry was tested a second time in the 41st minute. Gabby Agelis took aim toward the center of goal but Henry made her second stop of the half to keep things scoreless at intermission.
Wingate continued to take more of the chances early into the second half. Angela Maino took the first shot of the second half, seeing Henry make her third save on the shot toward the lower left side of goal.
Carson-Newman's first chance of the second half turned into its first goal. Audrey Gallagher dribbled in the middle of the pitch, dishing a pass off to Bukiewicz who crushed a left-footed shot into the upper right corner of goal to make it 1-0 Eagles in the 53rd minute.
"The play leading up to the goal was wonderful," Duffy said. "Molly turned so well and unleashed a that shot into the top corner perfectly."
Bukieiwcz is now up to eight goals this season. She has scored in all of C-N's seven wins this season.
The Eagles nearly added to their lead 20 minutes later. For the second time in the match, C-N hit the woodwork as Brooke Bolton delivered a shot off the crossbar.
After C-N's goal, Wingate would only get one shot attempted over the next 25 minutes of play. In the 58th minute, Ellie Polk had her shot blocked.
WU's final three shots were all on frame but didn't come until the final eight minutes of play. A good development allowed Wahrenberg to fire a shot toward the lower left side of goal but Henry was the save.
Their final two chances came with less than 90 seconds left. Agelis took the first, but it was a routine play for Henry in the 89th minute. The last chance came as the buzzer sounded. A deflected clearing ball went right to a WU attacker who crushed a shot at Henry, but the freshman was ready for it to hold on for the clean sheet.
Henry's clean sheet is the first of her career and it comes in her first career start. The Eagles now have six clean sheets as a team this season, with Saturday's being the third in conference play. She made six saves in the victory.
"Hats off to Olivia for stepping up in her first collegiate start," Duffy said. "Very proud of her today."
The Eagles outshot the Bulldogs 13-10 but had less shots on goal 6-3. C-N had the advantages in corner kicks, 4-3.
