JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – It was two seniors that helped salvage a point for Carson-Newman (7-4-3, 3-3-3 SAC) on Senior Day. Alayna Corbitt's free kick connected with the head of Molly Bukiewicz and the ball rolled into the bottom left corner of the goal to tie Anderson (8-4-2, 5-3-1 SAC) in the final seconds on Saturday evening at McCown Field.
The tie between Anderson and Carson-Newman is just the second in the series' history.
The game's first shot was the game's first goal. An errant pass set up Anderson with a chance in its attacking third. Ansley Douty came up with the takeaway and booted a left-footed shot from the center of the pitch into the top left corner to start the scoring in the 5th minute.
Carson-Newman's second shot of the match would be its first shot on goal. Selina Jud sent a shot toward the bottom part of goal but watched Anderson keeper Aliyah Morgan make her first save of the match.
Making her second straight start, Olivia Henry wasn't tested too often after the early goal but did make her first save of the match in the 19th minute. AU's Gabrielle Kirchner's shot in the bottom right part of net was kept out by Henry.
C-N went 28 minutes of play before getting its next shot on target. Senior Elysia Teske headed a shot toward the right side but Morgan saved her second of the half. She made one final first half save in the 44th minute. Off the bench, Elly Leander's shot toward the center of goal forced a stop.
The Eagles outshot AU eight to three in the first half and dominated the chances into the second half when trailing by a goal.
After AU attempted the first shot of the second half, Carson-Newman went on to attempt the next nine of the match and three of those needed saves. Morgan made stops on a Karli Pettitt shot in the 51st minute, a Felicia Frick shot in the 55th minute and an Audrey Gallagher attempt in the 64th minute. Along with those threats on goal, Krista Nielsen hit the post in the 65th minute.
Despite seeing Morgan make saves and getting unlucky with a few chances, C-N stayed on the attack. A foul led to a C-N free kick just outside the box, but Alba Delgado missed high with the chance in the 78th minute.
Sifa Morgan attempted the game's next two shots just two minutes apart. One was blocked and another missed wide.
Pettitt tried her hand again in the 88th minute. Her chance toward the top part of goal was kept out of goal again Morgan.
C-N's Morgan would help create one last chance in the final minute. She gained possession and was fouled by AU's Madison Bowling to give the Eagles a free kick with less than 30 seconds left. Corbitt took the free kick from just beyond midfield, lifting a ball into the box where Bukiewicz positioned herself to win the header with the goalie charging out. It was a perfect header and AU's defender was unable to make a last chance effort and C-N tied it with 16 seconds remaining.
"Throughout the year you kind of learn what each person does," Bukiewicz said. "I typically know where Alayna (Corbitt) plays the ball in. I hang in that area and sure enough there it came. I saw it, did my best to flick it. I turned and saw nobody in the goal and I watched bounce right on in. Happy that it happened."
Bukiewicz's 90th minute goal is the latest goal since Emilee Futrell's 90th minute goal against Wingate in the 2018 South Atlantic Conference quarterfinals.
The late goal also allows C-N to earn its first point of the year when conceding the game's first goal and when trailing at halftime.
Carson-Newman attempted 22 shots, its most in a conference game this season and the second-most in any game this year. C-N's nine shots on goal were its second-most in a game this season.
Anderson recorded just five shots, but three of them hit the target. C-N held the advantage in corner kicks four to three.
Carson-Newman plays its final home regular season game on Wednesday night versus Tusculum. First touch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network is available with a subscription to FloSports.
