ANDERSON, S.C. – Third-seeded Anderson (10-4-2) scored goals in each half to defeat sixth-seeded Carson-Newman (8-5-3) 2-0 in Saturday night's South Atlantic Conference quarterfinal match at Spero Financial Field.
"Not our night tonight unfortunately against a good Anderson team," Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "We could never seem to find any rhythm to get into the game which is the most frustrating part. Our wonderful seniors played their last game tonight for Carson-Newman. I cannot thank them enough for everything they've done for this program over their time in an Eagles uniform."
The game's first chance was a 10th minute corner kick by Carson-Newman. The Eagles were unable to record a shot off the corner.
AU's Catherine Nardella ripped the first shot in the 13th minute, but it came from 25 yards away and missed way right and stayed in play.
C-N's first chance was a Molly Bukiewicz (Beavercreek, Ohio) header that missed left of goal in the 16th minute.
Two minutes later, Anderson would start the scoring. Ansley Douty ran after a long pass into the box and sent a pass into the middle of the box where Camryn Woods sent a left-footed shot into the upper part of goal to put the Trojans ahead 1-0 in the 17th minute.
Carson-Newman would get two more corner kicks in the 30th and 33rd minutes but was unable to get any shots off those plays.
Anderson nearly extended its lead in the 42nd minute. A Ceci Pumariega header was punched away by Berna Kabakci to keep the deficit at a goal at intermission.
AU outshot C-N 5-3, but the Eagles held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
After seeing the Trojans fire off the first two shots of the half, C-N would get its first in the 51st minute. Audrey Gallagher sent a ground shot toward goal that Anderson goalie Aliyah Morgan could handle.
The Anderson lead extended in the 57th minute. For the second time in the match, Ansley Douty connected with Camryn Woods on a corner kick to make the score 2-0.
C-N went right to work to try and trim into the deficit. Bukiewicz's header attempt was stopped off a corner in the 58th minute.
Gallagher tried her hand again with another shot on frame in the 62nd minute, but Morgan made the stop on the shot toward the center of goal.
Kabakci kept the Eagles within two in the 72nd minute. She saved a Whitley Anderson shot for her second save of the match.
The Eagles attempted three shots in the span of four minutes. The only shot on frame was the latter of the three, Annika Fend's attempt toward the center of frame that Morgan stopped in the 77th minute.
C-N's final shot on frame would come in the 85th minute. Morgan made her sixth and final save on a Selina Jud shot toward the top of goal.
Jud had another attempt miss frame in the final minute of the match.
After just three shots in the opening half, C-N compiled 11 in the second half but was unable to score on its six shots on frame.
Bukiewicz, Gallagher and Jud each took three shots with Fend taking Carosn-Newman's other two in the match.
The win for the Trojans is their fourth over C-N in the past six meetings.
Carson-Newman ends the season with an 8-5-3 overall record.
