C-N’s rally comes up short in Hartsville
In a game that took more than four hours to play, it was Coker (4-1-0, 1-0-0 SAC) holding off a late Carson-Newman (3-3-0, 0-2-0 SAC) rally on Saturday afternoon in Hartsville, South Carolina.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – In a game that took more than four hours to play, it was Coker (4-1-0, 1-0-0 SAC) holding off a late Carson-Newman (3-3-0, 0-2-0 SAC) rally on Saturday afternoon in Hartsville, South Carolina.
A game that started at 1:00 p.m. did not conclude until around 5:15 p.m. Carson-Newman and Coker played the first 20 minutes, before inclement weather in the Hartsville area forced the two teams to leave the field. The weather delay lasted more than 2 hours.
Around 3:45 p.m. play resumed. The two teams retook the field and played the final 25 minutes of the opening half and the rest of the match.
"Very disappointing result," Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "Our overall performance was not good enough to win today. Coker deserved the win."
The loss ends a nine-game winning streak for Carson-Newman against Coker. In the win, the Cobras matched their goal total for the last nine years against C-N, scoring twice on Saturday.
Before the delay, Carson-Newman attempted three shots. Selina Jud, Molly Bukiewicz and Krista Nielsen also missed target on their shots toward goal.
When play resumed, C-N would compile two more shots in the first half. Coker attempted just one, and the game was scoreless in the opening half.
The game changed in the 48th minute. Coker was awarded a free kick and made the most of it. The ball into the box deflected to Tilde Karlsson, who booted the ball into the back of the net to put the Cobras up 1-0.
Carson-Newman's aggressiveness would pick up significantly after conceding. Karli Pettitt (Kingston, Tenn.) attempted two of those three shots, including C-N's first on goal, forcing Coker goalkeeper Rhyan Parkin to make her first save of the match in the 56th minute.
On just Coker's third shot of the match, it would strike for its second goal. Catriona McNeil scored for Coker to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Eagles continued to fight. Elysia Teske (Augusta, Ga.) scored her first career goal to cut the deficit in half. Selina Jud (Wilderswil, Switzerland) found Teske, whose shot flew over the Parkin and into the net for a 73rd minute goal.
Carson-Newman would begin to mount more and more chances to equalize. In the 78th minute, Annika Fend had a shot go on target that Parkin saved.
Parkin came up big in the 82nd minute as well. She saved a Jud shot to keep the Cobras in front.
The Eagles would get one shot and one corner kick in the final minutes, but could not find a game-tying goal.
Carson-Newman outshot Coker 14-10, but just four of those attempts went on target.
For the second straight game, the Eagles reset their season-high for corner kicks taking 10 in the match.
Berna Kabakci (Zeddam, Netherlands) made three saves in a losing effort.
Carson-Newman continues a three-game road trip on Wednesday at Mars Hill. First touch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. A video stream of the match is available with a subscription to FloSports.
